We have previously discussed many of these laws and
special features of universe, from charge of electron to mass of proton to speed of light
etc. that has baffled science and defy explanation not because they happen to have a
certain size, speed , mass etc. but because it turns out in every case that particular
size, speed , charge, etc. is the only one that can produce life as we know it and none
other. Theoretically and in an accidental universe they could have taken any values
between zero and infinity, yet in every case out of all these almost countless
possibilities they have just that one value, that one number that is required for life.
This point can not be emphasized enough that a little more of this and a little of less of
that... would not have been sufficient. As far as we know, no other combination would have
done it.
We know for example the crucial role C&O play in
life. They play even a more fundamental role in nucleosynthesis, production of elements in
stars. Without these two the whole chain of elements production would have collapsed and
the result would have been no supernova , no universe as we know it at all. And of course,
it is not just enough to have C&O but they must be produced at an exact ratio and they
must have an exact energy level, no other variation and combination will do.
20th century science has discovered these special
features of the universe, but has been unable to explain them without having to admit God
and His design . But, as usual, this has no stopped them from giving all kinds of
nonsensical explanations which we can summarize under two categories:
A. Those who do admit that at present we have no
explanation and it appears to be design but insist science will eventually be able to
explain it without any need for God. Even from their own perspective this seems more and
more unlikely. None of their theories in last 50 years or so has made any breakthrough and
has been continually discarded and replaced by another. But more importantly the best
these theories are supposed to accomplish is really a simplification of what we know and
the ultimate questions would still remain. Remember we are not talking about why the sky
is blue, for example, science can answer these easily, but the answers themselves lead to,
and are based ultimately on laws of nature and special features of the universe, and we
can not go any further, they are "given". As the philosopher said ; when all the
scientific questions have been answered the problem of life would still remain completely
untouched, whether we are ever able to unify origins of these forces or not, the ultimate
questions would still remain unanswered, except through God's design.
B. The second line of so called explanations fall under
what is called Anthropic principle , which essentially says, in one way or another :
things are the way they are because they had to be otherwise we would not be here. This
does not really explain anything at all . All it does is to state the obvious fact that we
are here so it should not really be taken seriously as an explanation.
The same also applies to the so called multiple
universe theories which in one form or another say there are countless number of
universes, some having no earth like planet, some having countless earth like planets,
some having no carbon... and all variations in between and ours just happen to have all
the right characteristics and conditions for life and evolution of life. It is really
absurd to try to explain the one physical universe we know of by inventing an infinite
number of them. It is even more absurd that these ideas are taken seriously by some
supposedly very rational scientists, probably showing degree of their desperation to stick
to any idea that supposedly negates God.
There is, however, a new line of explanation on the
part of some main line researchers and scientists. They have finally begun to use the D
word- Design- in a serious way. Here are some quotes:
1.The conditions in our universe really do seem to be
uniquely suitable for life forms like ourselves.
2. All evidence suggests this is not just any old
universe , but one which is amazingly adjusted and fine tuned for existence of human
beings.
3. At every step it looks as if universe is just
unfolding according to some plan or blue print. These rules look as if they are product of
intelligent design, I do not see how that can possibly be denied.
These are not quotes from some religious fanatics.
These are people who have been trying for years, a lifetime, to find an explanation other
than God and from these quotes it appears they are admitting at least design of some sort.
Obviously they felt it is far beyond coincidence, there
are just too many and too precise, too interrelated to be coincident. They could not
explain it by attributing it to some kind of Darwinian evolution, because even according
to its own proponents, Darwinian type evolution works only when there is a whole number of
individuals so a selection can be made.
Accordingly, it has no relevance here at all because
when it comes to Laws of Physics, initial cosmological conditions, and fundamentals such
as the charge of the electron, by almost all admissions, they are absolutely unique. They
are now as they have always been - uniquely, exactly, unchangeably and eternally designed
for evolution of life. No matter how accurately you measure, for example, the charge of
electron now here on earth , anywhere in the universe, any time in the history of
universe, it is and it has always been the same. It did not evolve to its present strength
and does not evolve to anything smaller, bigger, stronger.
As one physicist said: " if we could play God and
select values for these quantities at whim by selecting a set of knobs, we would find that
almost all knob settings would render universe uninhabitable , not only that, but in many
cases , different knobs have to be fine tuned to enormous precision if universe were to
survive and life to flourish."
With powerful evidence such as these, you'd think
people would take heed, would fall prostrate before God, but those who have decided to
disbelieve continue to reject, continue to find objections. Now that they have been
defeated in one area they turn to another area.
I have heard and read objections saying why all these
billions of stars and galaxies, if purpose was to create earth and give humans a second
chance, what a waste, they object. How could there be any connection between all these
billions of stars and this tiny, insignificant planet in a corner of universe. Why should
the appearance of life on this tiny planet require the supporting cast of billions of
galaxies?
As usual, these people use every evidence, every sign
exactly the opposite of what God intended . Instead of praising and glorifying God they
use it to ridicule and deny His existence.
We can answer these objections and questions in a
number of ways. Firstly it is not that all these multitudes are scattered all over
haphazardly, independently , and with no connections to each other. We already discussed
their connections in terms of the laws of physics. We can express these connections in
other ways as well.
If you plot the mass and size of all objects in
universe, from atoms to elephants to stars and galaxies and connect all the points on the
graph, you'll obtain almost a straight line, in effect connecting all things in the
universe, from smallest to the largest, from atoms to galaxies, one unified whole. Once
again, this is not just some insignificant piece of information, it is not some trivia, it
has baffled physicists why that should be so.
We can also answer objector's question regarding size
of the universe and multitudes of stars and galaxies in another way. As you know, theory
of Relativity unified the concepts of space and time. From these, relations have been
developed that directly expresses connections between mass, size and age of an expanding
universe. In simple terms, if you know one you can essentially calculate the other. Let's
say our universe contained just one galaxy, this may seem very economical (and might make
objectors happy although no doubt they'll find other reasons to object), but a universe of
just one galaxy , 100 billion stars , would have expanded for only about 30 days and would
have collapsed, with no possibility of life or anything else for that matter. So, once
again it is God who has designed all this for the evolution of life.
Of course, God is God. He could have designed any
system, may be earth and just one galaxy or may be earth and just one star (what a boring
universe that would have been), why then all the vastness, all the multitudes, magnitudes,
beauties, mysteries? I would like to think that God has created all these just for you and
me; for all the believers everywhere, at all times and throughout the ages, for all
sincere seekers of truth, for all those who wish to praise and glorify God, the True King
, the Lord of the Universe, the Protector and Friend of all believers in His absolute
Oneness, those who do not associate any thing or any being with Him. God has designed it
so we can appreciate some of His glory and power and majesty.
As for the disbelievers, they will not believe and it
does not make any difference whether there is one galaxy or 100 trillion galaxies. For
them it is always too small, too large, too this and too that.
