Many
religious writings speak of the senses, gifts from
our Creator:
Have they not roamed the earth, then
used their minds
to understand, or their ears to hear?
(Quran, 22:46)
The
ear that hears, and the eye that sees- the Lord has made them both. (Proverbs, 20:12)
"'Though
you hear my words repeatedly, you won't
understand them. Though you watch and watch as I perform my miracles, still you won't know what they mean.'
Dull their understanding, close their ears and shut their eyes. I don't want them to see or
to hear or to understand,
or to turn to me to heal them."
(Isaiah, 6:9-10)
Our eyes may see some uncleanness,
but let not our mind see things that are not clean. Our ears may hear some uncleanness, but let not our
mind hear things that are not clean. (Common Shinto Prayer)
God brought you out of your mother's
bellies knowing
nothing. He gave you the hearing, the eyesight and the brains that you may be appreciative.
(Quran, 16:78)
Is not sight a jewel? Is not heating a treasure? Is not speech a glory?
0 my Lord pardon my ingratitude, and pity my dullness who am not sensible of these gifts. The freedom of thy bounty hath deceived
me. These things were too near to be considered. Thou presentedst me with Thy blessings, and I was not aware.
But now I give thanks and adore
and praise Thee for Thine inestimable favors.
(Thomas Traherne, 1637?-74)
